The RPS Frame Edit

Start with the print you love and the wall where it will hang. Here are three ways to frame an 8 × 10 art print, from the wide mat in our breakfast nook to a slim wood frame that fits on a shelf.

The bird study and colorful fish plate hang in matching dark frames on a dusty blue wall above an oak breakfast table.

The bird’s upturned beak and the bright fish silhouettes have room to breathe against the pale mats. Choose the portrait 4:5 file from the Aert Schouman bird download and the 18th-century fish download. Print each one at 8 inches wide by 10 inches high. Each artwork is sold individually.

Black with a wide mat

Choose the upsimples black 11 × 14 frame with a mat sized for an 8 × 10 print. Use two for the breakfast-nook pair. The mat overlaps the paper slightly. Lay it over each proof to check that the bird’s feet and the outermost fish stay visible.

Black for a smaller wall

Choose the upsimples black 8 × 10 frame and take out its 5 × 7 mat. The artwork will sit closer to the black edge. This is the size I’d use beside a desk where a pair of 11 × 14 frames would feel crowded.

Natural wood for a shelf

The upsimples natural solid wood 8 × 10 frame picks up the warm tones of an oak table. Remove its 5 × 7 mat for an 8 × 10 print. Try the bird on its own on a shelf, where you can see the marks around its eye up close.

Before you hang the pair

Measure the outside of each frame and cut two paper templates to those dimensions. Tape them up with the top edges level and step back to your usual seat. Adjust the gap there. For a printed gift, tuck a note on the back with the artwork title and why you chose it.

Read One Bird, Many Fish and see how the pair works together.
